Starting March 1, 2025, Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul will enforce a nighttime curfew to manage the impact of excessive tourism and improve the quality of life for residents. This decision follows a successful four-month trial period initiated in November 2024.
Key Highlights:
- Curfew Hours: Tourists can visit Bukchon Hanok Village’s “Red Zone” only between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Fines: A fine of 100,000 won (approximately US$70) will be imposed on those who enter the area outside these hours for tourism purposes.
- Exemptions: Residents, their families, and non-tourism-related visitors, such as shoppers and accommodation guests, will not be fined.
- Additional Measures: A ban on charter buses in the area was also implemented in January 2025 to reduce illegal parking and traffic congestion.
The Jongno-gu Office, responsible for the curfew, aims to balance the needs of residents and local businesses while promoting responsible tourism. The curfew targets the “Red Zone,” a 34,000-square-meter residential area around Bukchon-ro 11-gil, known for its traditional hanok houses.
Impact on Residents and Businesses
Residents have welcomed the curfew, hoping it will reduce disturbances and improve their living conditions. However, some local business owners are concerned about the potential drop in visitors affecting sales. The district office is considering additional solutions to support businesses while ensuring a peaceful environment for residents.
Sustainable Tourism
The curfew is part of a broader effort to establish a culture of sustainable tourism in Bukchon Hanok Village. By managing tourist access and reducing overcrowding, the district aims to protect the historical and cultural significance of the area while enhancing the experience for both residents and visitors.
